My name is Luke Joonki Jin, and as the Content & Insights Young leader for WAYE I analyze technology and innovations everyday. Today I want to focus on something much more specific and increasingly relevant to our world at large: Artificial Intelligence (AI), and how I, as a member of the future generation and as a 21 year old student at a technologically equipped university, really feel about it.
Over the past few years AI has become one of the top trending topics across the world. Browse through the tech column in any newspaper and I can guarantee that there will be at least one article about it. But as much as AI is an intriguing read, the advent of its implementation is simply inevitable; an implementation that draws an array of opinions and at often times, controversy. But shouldn’t this be an even bigger reason why everyone should be knowledgeable about it? Especially my (the youth) generation?
So how do young people actually feel about a future with artificial intelligence? The truth is we don’t know what to feel. We don't know whether we agree or disagree with it, we don’t know who is in charge, and we feel rather disconnected from whomever these decision makers may be. So because we don’t have all of the facts we tend to talk more about the exciting or extreme potentials- even the dystopian possibilities- because as a tech-centric generation one thing we know for sure is that anything could be possible.
So what would we like to see? AI education. Formal implementation of Artificial Intelligence as a topic of study across all schools. This would not only excite us (the youth), but would also allow us to build skill sets necessary and applicable for the future of the workforce. And why stop there? There are so many programming classes, so how come there are none for the technological breakthroughs at large? Better yet, the ethics behind implementing disruptive technologies.
What we (the youth) do know for sure is that AI is here to stay, and that we are likely just beginning an entire technological renaissance. We are excited for what the technology of the future holds, but until we have all of the facts, can only hope that it too will feel the same way about us.
